AI Needs Human Oversight: The Importance of Regulating Autonomous Weapons Systems

AI needs human oversight, To ensure our safety, Balance of power

The use of AI in the military is not a new concept. In fact, AI has been used in various military applications for decades, from logistics and data processing to intelligence and surveillance. However, the recent advancements in technology have led to the development of AWS – weapons systems that can identify, track, and engage targets without human intervention.

One of the main concerns surrounding AWS is the potential for these systems to make decisions that could result in civilian casualties. While some companies claim that their systems have no limitations on the level of autonomy, others have stressed the importance of human involvement in the decision-making process.

How much control should humans
have over these systems?

According to Alexander Kmentt, the disarmament director of the Austrian Foreign Ministry, the window to regulate AWS is closing fast. As technology continues to develop, it becomes increasingly difficult to keep up with regulations. This is a critical issue, as the use of AWS could have far-reaching consequences that could impact the safety and security of individuals and nations.

In addition to the potential for unintended casualties, there are also concerns about the ethical implications of using AI in the military. As AI systems are only as unbiased as the data they are trained on, there is a risk of perpetuating human biases and prejudices. This could have serious consequences in conflict situations, where decisions are often made under high pressure and with limited information.

The use of AWS raises questions
about accountability

In the event of a mistake or malfunction, who will be held responsible? With no human in the loop, it becomes difficult to assign blame and ensure justice for any wrongdoing. This lack of accountability could also have a negative impact on the public's trust in the military and the government.

However, it is not all doom and gloom. Some argue that AI has the potential to improve military operations and reduce the risk to human lives. For example, AI-assisted predictive maintenance can help identify equipment failure before it happens, avoiding unscheduled downtime and improving efficiency. AI can also aid in identifying targets and plotting weapons' effects, providing valuable support to human operators.

So, what is the solution?

The key lies in finding a balance between the benefits and risks of using AI in the military. While it is crucial to regulate AWS and ensure human control and accountability, it is also important to recognise the potential benefits and harness AI's capabilities to improve military operations.

In the UK, the Ministry of Defence has already taken steps towards regulating the use of AI in the military. In 2019, they published a code of conduct for the responsible use of AI, emphasising the need for human oversight and accountability. However, there is still much work to be done, and it is essential for other nations to follow suit and establish regulations for AWS.

Military AI is a complex issue that requires careful consideration and regulation

As technology continues to advance, it is crucial that we do not lose sight of the importance of human involvement and oversight in decision-making processes. While AI has the potential to improve military operations, it is vital that we do not sacrifice human control and accountability in the pursuit of progress.

AI needs human oversight!

About ...

I'm a 31-year veteran web developer, who published one of the first 1,000 websites in the entire world when I worked at The Open University way back in 1993. Since then I've been involved with projects big and small, funded and unfunded, corporate and commercial. I was part of the dot com boom and contracted in California in the mid-2000s.

On my return to the UK circa 2011, I started work on my digital marketing platform SLO Media, and have run that successfully for over a decade. During the pandemic, when we were all bored out of our skulls, I created YourPCM, a CRM designed exclusively for UK small business owners (sorry rest of the world), then built YourAI as my artificial intelligence playground (yay for the whole world!). Although it was only ever meant to be a new module for YourPCM, I made it available commercially when a number of my friends and networking buddies saw it and demanded access to this handy set of content creation tools.

And now we have sBlogIt! which is a more focused version of the blogging part of YourAI with enhancements up the wazoo and the ability to create and publish an entire blog post in just a few minutes using a low-cost token-based system. If you want to know more about all that, you can visit sblogit.com and sign up for free. We'll even give you 50 tokens to get you started, so no excuses, ok?

My head is in The Cloud, my heart belongs to The Web, and my soul is filled with such beautiful code 💗
