As artificial intelligence advances, the urgency for comprehensive human oversight in governing autonomous weapons systems (AWS) grows. Without regulation, the potential dangers may severely eclipse the benefits that AI can offer in military applications ...

AI needs human oversight, To ensure our safety, Balance of power

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is ushering in a new era of autonomous weapons systems (AWS). These systems, designed to operate with minimal human intervention, present unprecedented challenges for global governance. As technology races ahead of regulatory frameworks, the pressing need for human oversight has never been more vital.

A stark reality has emerged!

Many companies are developing AWS with levels of autonomy that can bypass human decision-making altogether. For instance, a German arms manufacturer boasts about a vehicle capable of locating and engaging targets independently, leaving it to the client to decide whether to enable lethal actions without human input. Such developments intensify the debate surrounding the ethical implications and potential consequences of fully autonomous systems.

Further complicating matters are AI-assisted tools already in active use. Israeli weapons systems have demonstrated a capacity to classify individuals as threats based on risk factors like weapon presence.

The possibility of misidentification, often paralleling human error, raises alarming questions about the decision-making processes behind these technologies. Ensuring that lethal actions are informed by human judgment is critical to prevent unintended consequences in complex and dynamic environments.

The situation is not entirely grim!

Many current applications of AI in the military focus on enhanced situational awareness, logistics, and maintenance, significantly reducing human errors in these realms. For instance, C3 AI has successfully integrated predictive maintenance for the US Air Force, reducing unscheduled downtimes by a remarkable 40%. This showcases how AI can better support human activities rather than replace them.

However, the discourse around military applications frequently returns to the most contentious aspect: weapons deployment. Advocates of AWS assert that autonomous systems can be variably more precise in execution than their human counterparts.

Yet, sceptics contend that algorithms should be designed with 'brakes' to prevent malfunction and misjudgement. For example, they emphasise that human oversight is essential to maintaining accountability and minimising errors in critical situations.

I believe that fully autonomous weapons are still some way off. Mainstream application of AI in military frameworks focus on non-lethal purposes, such as missile defence systems that enhance human decision-making. If an AWS has a 'switchable mode,' wherein operators can toggle between fully autonomous response and human control, this may offer a practical solution.

As autonomous systems develop, the promise of Artificial Intelligence can be harnessed for improved military efficacy and safety. However, the spectre of lethal decisions delegated wholly to AI is daunting.

Balancing advancements in technology with stringent human oversight requirements will be crucial!

While Artificial Intelligence offers transformative possibilities for defence, it is imperative that robust regulatory frameworks and human-centric control mechanisms steer the development of military applications. The future of warfare may hinge on how effectively humanity can govern its creations in an increasingly automated world.

About Steffi Lewis ...

Steffi Lewis

Based in the charming village of Hanslope in Buckinghamshire, UK, I bring over 30 years of experience in web development. From creating my first website for the Open University in 1993, through being part of the dot com boom, to my explorations in SaaS and AI over the last few years, my journey has been a rich tapestry of web projects, big and small, both funded and bootstrapped.

Originally developed during the pandemic, at the start of 2025, I released the next iteration of YourPCM, version 2, which is all about 'Easy Contact Management for Small Business Owners'. Is it a CRM? Yes, but I don't call it that because people glaze over at the mention of such things. CRMs are boring, difficult to get to grips with, and it's a nightmare to get help when you need it.

YourPCM is none of those things! It's simple to use, well-supported, feature rich and beautiful, right out of the box. It's available on a simple monthly subscription with no long-term tie-in. Book a demo or grab your own 14-working-day free trial and discover why YourPCM is all about easy contact management for small business owners.

My head is in the cloud, my heart belongs to the web, and my soul is filled with such beautiful code 💗
