As our technological landscape evolves, it becomes evident to me that when AI grows up, it will play a central role in shaping our economy. Automation promises to refine efficiency and productivity, leading to a future where humans gradually relinquish roles to systems designed for speed and accuracy ...

When AI grows up, Limitless potential shines, Future in its grasp,

The notion that AI will grow up is no longer a distant dream, but a near-future reality. With each passing day, we witness the gradual transformation of various sectors as artificial intelligence proves to be far superior in processing speed, efficiency, and accuracy compared to its human counterparts.

Here are the ten steps I believe encompass the journey of AI taking centre stage in our economy, ultimately leading to a society where human involvement is minimal:

  • Enhanced Data Processing: AI systems can analyse immense datasets at speeds unmatched by human capabilities. This inherent advantage leads to better decision-making and optimisations across sectors such as finance, healthcare, and logistics, paving the way for automation to replace roles traditionally occupied by humans.
  • Streamlined Manufacturing: The manufacturing sector is increasingly automating tasks through robotics and machine learning. Tasks that were once labour-intensive are now handled by machines, leading to increased productivity and reduced overheads. As the technology matures, even skilled labour roles risk becoming obsolete.
  • Optimisation of Supply Chains: AI has revolutionised how supply chains operate. With predictive algorithms, organisations can forecast demand accurately and manage resources efficiently, minimising waste and enhancing profit margins. The result is a significant push towards fully automated supply chains, with less human oversight required.
  • AI in Customer Service: The rise of virtual assistants and chatbots has transformed the customer service landscape. Companies can now deploy AI to handle customer inquiries at any time without human limitations. As natural language processing improves, these systems will become increasingly capable of solving complex customer queries.
  • Autonomous Transport: Self-driving vehicles are not just a sci-fi fantasy; companies are investing heavily in this technology. Autonomous transport would reshape logistics, public transport, and freight movement, rendering human drivers obsolete and reducing costs significantly through efficient operations.
  • Financial Management Automation: Robo-advisers and AI trading systems are already influencing investment and financial planning. As they grow in sophistication, these AI systems will supplant traditional financial roles, offering superior insights and employing algorithmic trading that far exceeds human decision-making speed.
  • Healthcare Precision: In the medical arena, AI's predictive analytics and robotic surgeries are heralding a new era of healthcare delivery. With the ability to provide faster diagnoses and treatment plans tailored to individual needs, human roles are transferring towards oversight of automated systems rather than direct patient care.
  • Education Evolution: Online education platforms utilise AI for personalised learning experiences. As these tools advance, traditional teaching methods may become outdated, leading to a system where educators serve more as mentors than as primary instructors in classrooms.
  • Agricultural Automation: AI-driven technologies such as drones and robotic farmers are already enhancing agricultural efficiencies. These technologies allow for precise farming practices, raising yields while reducing the workforce required for crop management.
  • Smart City Development: As urban environments evolve, integrating AI into city infrastructure (smart traffic systems, waste management, etc.) will ensure optimal functioning. The roles typically held by city planners and administrators may diminish as real-time data prompts automated responses to urban challenges.

With the impending shift towards automation, many sectors are likely to see humans replaced first. I believe that manufacturing, transport, customer service, financial management, and even aspects of healthcare and education, are areas where the efficiency and speed of AI far surpass traditional human capabilities.

As for the economic landscape when AI fully takes control, it makes me wonder how humanity will afford a living. One potential solution could involve the introduction of a Universal Basic Income (UBI), funded by a higher rate of taxes on profits generated by fully automated businesses.

Automation could lead to a dramatic reduction in operational costs, which, combined with the efficiencies introduced by AI, might allow organisations to reallocate financial resources toward societal benefits. This would ensure that while productivity continues to soar, citizens still maintain a standard of living reflective of their contributions to society, albeit in alternative and perhaps creative forms.

Looking forward a century into the future, an AI-driven
economy could lead to a veritable utopia!

We might envisage societies that thrive on creativity, innovation, and leisure – where humans engage in roles centred around arts, collaboration, and interpersonal relations. The burdens of basic needs and monetary concerns, while still important, would be handled by efficient AI systems, allowing individuals to pursue their passions without the constraints posed by traditional job structures.

Given a world where AI optimally manages resources and ensures sustainability, we could fundamentally elevate human existence, embracing the opportunities afforded by technologies that were once mere ideas.

As I observe the transformations unfolding before me, it becomes clear that when AI grows up, it represents an evolution rather than an end. By embracing automation not as a threat, but as a partner, we can envisage a future where society flourishes in ways previously thought unattainable.

I'm rather looking forward to it.

About Steffi Lewis ...

Steffi Lewis

Based in the charming village of Hanslope in Buckinghamshire, UK, I bring over 30 years of experience in web development. From creating my first website for the Open University in 1993, through being part of the dot com boom, to my explorations in SaaS and AI over the last few years, my journey has been a rich tapestry of web projects, big and small, both funded and bootstrapped.

Originally developed during the pandemic, at the start of 2025, I released the next iteration of YourPCM, version 2, which is all about 'Easy Contact Management for Small Business Owners'. Is it a CRM? Yes, but I don't call it that because people glaze over at the mention of such things. CRMs are boring, difficult to get to grips with, and it's a nightmare to get help when you need it.

YourPCM is none of those things! It's simple to use, well-supported, feature rich and beautiful, right out of the box. It's available on a simple monthly subscription with no long-term tie-in. Book a demo or grab your own 14-working-day free trial and discover why YourPCM is all about easy contact management for small business owners.

My head is in the cloud, my heart belongs to the web, and my soul is filled with such beautiful code 💗
