The Moon has always been a source of fascination for humankind. In recent years it has become the centre of a new era of space exploration. Countries and companies are vying for resources and dominance. Consequently, the Moon has become a hotly contested destination. As this race intensifies, questions arise about the implications for international cooperation and the future of lunar exploration.

As images of China's flag unfurled on the Moon were beamed back to Earth, the world was reminded of the ongoing race for lunar dominance. China's recent mission to return samples from the Moon's far side is just one of many recent lunar landings. India, Japan and private companies are all making their mark. The Moon is becoming a new frontier for exploration.

Concerns about the implications of this
race have been raised

The Outer Space Treaty of 1967, signed by over 100 nations, states that no nation can own the Moon. It also states that any exploration must benefit all humankind. This treaty was born out of the fear that space could become a battleground for the Cold War between the US and the Soviet Union.

However, the rise of private companies in space exploration blurs the lines. The recent announcement of a US commercial mission carrying human ashes DNA samples and a sports drink to the Moon sparked debate. Questions arose about the true intentions and benefits of these missions.

One of the key concerns is that the rapid pace of space exploration is outpacing our laws. Companies and countries race to the Moon, yet there is a lack of clear regulations and guidelines for their actions. This raises questions about the protection of the lunar environment and the preservation of historical sites such as the Apollo landing sites. 

But the race for the Moon is not just about
exploration and scientific discovery

It is also about resources and space dominance. The Moon is rich in valuable resources such as helium-3, which could potentially be used for nuclear fusion energy. With the increasing demand for resources on Earth, the Moon has become a potential source for meeting these needs. As countries and companies compete for these resources, tensions may arise. International cooperation may be strained.

The presence of permanent bases on the Moon raises concerns about the militarization of space. With nations and companies establishing a foothold on the lunar surface the potential for conflict and competition increases. Justin Holcomb, a geologist from the University of Kansas, warns that our relationship with the Moon is about to fundamentally change.
